Five Ways to Thank Your Customers

Every year we celebrate National Small Business Week in late October with events geared towards encouraging entrepreneurship and growing our existing business community. So how do small businesses become successful? Ask any entrepreneur and understanding your customer and offering excellent customer service are keys to success. In this edition of AirdrieNOW.5 we share five ways to thank your customers for their loyalty and helping your business succeed.

  1. Thank You Letters
Write a personal thank you letter. Low cost and highly effective, a thoughtful and unexpected thank you letter will certainly make an impression.

  2. Referral Rewards
The ultimate compliment from a client is providing a referral. Airdrie businesses are very cooperative and share referrals often. Acknowledge and reward client referrals with discounts on future purchases or with a quick note.

  3. Host Events
Host an event (customer appreciation day, new product launch, special guest) at your store or office. Offer special pricing for customers during events to ensure return trips.

  4. Gift CardYour clients will remember you when you redeem your gift card to coffee shops, restaurants or other local shops. For extra community benefit consider partnering with another Airdrie business and send eachother's gift cards.

  5. InvitationsAll clients are important but sometimes it is important to reward your top clients and spend face-time developing the relationship over lunch, at a hockey game or over a coffee.

AirdrieNOW.5 - Social Media

Social media is quickly emerging as one of the 21st centuries most active marketing channels. Big companies from Dell to Starbucks are using various forms of social media to engage their markets and sell their brands. The best part of social media is you don't have to be a mega-billion dollar company to be successful. Airdrie companies are popping up on Facebook, Twitter and other social media networks reaching out to customers and sharing information.

How do companies manage social media? Here's 5 great applications (including a few we use) to efficiency run a social media campaign:

  1. Hootsuite: My personal favourite, Hootsuite is a professional social media client that allows you to manage multiple accounts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) in one easy to use interface. Hootsuite is especially useful for Twitter users with pre-scheduled tweets and the ability to track and measure success. Too many followers? Let Hootsuite's customizable columns track topics and people you care about most - http://www.hootsuite.com

  2. Tweetdeck: Is a similar product to Hootsuite. The minor difference between the two is TweetDeck is launched via your computer's desktop and Hootsuite is a web-based application. Both are awesome and fully compatible with iPhones for our more mobile readers - http://www.tweetdeck.com/

  3. TwitterFeed: For Twitter users I suggest using an automated tweeting application called TwitterFeed. Simply set-up any RSS feeds you may have (blog, YouTube videos, photo-sharing such as Flickr) using this application to automatically populate your Twitter. Great for sharing information across multiple social media applications - http://twitterfeed.com/

  4. WeFollow / Twellow / TweetFind: A great way to gain more followers is by creating an account using a public directory service such as WeFollow, Twellow or Tweetfind. Consider these the YellowPages of Twitter, a directory to list your location and products/services. And remember, it pays to have a presence on all three -

    http://www.tweetfind.com/

  5. Twitpic: Remember the miracle on the Hudson River where a US Airways plane landed in New York Citys's Hudson River without casualties? Traditional media were not the first to break the story, it was a person with a cellphone that uploaded images via Twitpic. This service quickly and easily uploads photos to your Twitter account from any cellphone, great for capturing those important moments - http://twitpic.com/

Like these applications but have questions? Join us for "Blogs, Tweets and Followers, Does Social Media Work for Your Business?" on Thursday, May 20th from 12-1pm at City Hall. Bring along your lunch and questions to this informal hour of learning.

Next month we look at five online resources for the companies looking at expanding into international markets. If you have a topic you would like covered please post in the comments section below.

An Hour of Social Media Happiness

Not quite a Jimmy Buffet inspired happy hour is the best way what I (Chris) have planned for noon today. There's nothing on the menu, simply an open hour to ask questions about what social media tools: Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare; are viable options for your business. Heck, we may even set-up a social media presence for someone in attendance today.

I'm excited to share my experiences with social media and some of the trends and patterns emerging for all businesses. Should be a great time and remember to bring your lunch.

Today's (Friday, Feb 26th) Happy Hour Details:

Time: 12-1pm
Location: Airdrie City Hall
Cost: Absolutely nothing

Next Happy Hour:

Date: Thursday, March 4th
Time: 9-10am
Location: Airdrie City Hall
Cost: Again, absolutely nothing

It's Renewal Season

2010 is poised to be a rebound year after the uncertainty of 2009. In the first month of 2010 we have seen new developments take shape throughout Airdrie with the city's 2nd Shoppers Drug Mart opening this week, the Creekside project (Sobey's and additional retail) gaining momentum and optimism from developers for new projects in all areas of the city.

The new year is also time to renew your Airdrie business license. As your Economic Development team, our job is to provide added-value for renewing your business license. There are many ways we turn your business license application fee into opportunities for your business. Here are a few:

This year we will be revamping our less than ideal online business directory to be more user-friendly building in the tools and applications for the modern business world. Our directory lists all Airdrie-based businesses and is most of the most visited tools on our website. The new look business directory is sure to increase the online profile for our Airdrie-based businesses.

We, Airdrie Economic Development, partner with the Airdrie Business Resource Partnership (ABRP) to provide workshop, training and educational sessions throughout the year. This is highlighted by Small Business Week in October with plans to grow and improve upon last year's highly successful week. Our next flagship event will be the "Doing More with Less: LEAN Thinking" workshop on March 2nd, 2010. Registration is available on the ABRP website.

We also do our best to keep your business up-to-date on industry news happening in Airdrie through our Airdrie@Work enewsletter (free subscriptions also available), social media platforms (Twitter @AirdrieNOW, Blog, Slideshare and Scribd) and industry presentations. You never know where a good lead could come from...

These are just a sample of the services we offer to our business community. To renew your business license or make any changes please contact our Business Licensing Officer, Colleen Kinley at 403.948.8800 ext 8837.
